Capacity analysis of voice over IP over GERAN with statistical multiplexing
نویسنده
چکیده
The requirements in terms of service flexibility, spectrum efficiency and speech quality introduce new challenges when voice is transmitted over packet and over wireless. This paper analyses the perceived voice quality when voice frames are transported on packet radio bearers of GSM/EDGE Radio Access Networks (GERAN) and are statistically multiplexed. The resulting quality depends on the link layer quality, on the scheduling and on the header compression algorithms. This paper identifies the range of capacity gain obtained with statistical multiplexing for a given speech quality considering the different radio bearers of GERAN.

Network Provisioning & Resource Management for IP Telephony1
The rapid growth of IP-based packet switched network and the overall bandwidth efficiency of an integrated IP network make it an attractive candidate to transport real time voice connections. However, high quality voice over IP (VoIP) remains a challenge because interactive voice imposes many performance requirements (such as loss rate and latency) on the transport network. This cannot be easil...
متن کاملThe Performance of Multiplexing Voice and Circuit Switched Data in UMTS over IP-Networks
For the transmission of voice traffic in IP-networks the commonly used protocol suite for realtime data transfer in IP-networks leads to a very large protocol overhead for voice data and a poor utilization of the bandwidth for user data. Multiplexing several flows on a route into one IP packet overcomes this problem. In the future UMTS, realtime traffic like voice and circuit switched data are ...

IP telephony, also called voice over Internet protocol (VoIP), is rapidly becoming a familiar term and technology that is implementing in the enterprise, education, government organizations and industry. Mobile IP telephony is the new generation of communications networks that makes possible the convergence of voice and data over wireless local area networks (WLANs). This technology combines da...
متن کاملA multiplexing scheme for H.323 voice-over-IP applications
Voice communications such as telephony are delay sensitive. Existing voice-over-IP (VoIP) applications transmit voice data in packets of very small size to minimize packetization delay, causing very inefficient use of network bandwidth. This paper proposes a multiplexing scheme for improving the bandwidth efficiency of existing VoIP applications. By installing a multiplexer in an H.323 proxy, v...
متن کاملOn Dynamic Capacity Management in Voice/frame Relaying Networks
We consider call admission and capacity management in a dynamically recon gurable network that carries a multitude of tra cs. Our approach is a heuristic capacity assignment algorithm designed to maximise an arbitrary pro t function. The algorithm is based on the concept of equivalent circuits, i.e. a given relationship between transmission capacities and call handling capabilities expressed as...
